Bio & Discography
Born in Bakersfield, California and raised in Tacoma, Washington, Julio Appling’s musical upbringing included classical piano and guitar performance, gospel guitarist and bassist, and jazz studies from middle school through college. Julio received his bachelors’ degree in music (bass performance) from the University of Redlands and his masters’ degree in Musicology from Bowling Green State University. He has taught courses in music and technology at BGSU Firelands, Tiffin University, and Clark College.
Julio currently serves as the primary bassist for Trio Flux led by guitarist Neil Mattson, and The Student Loan, a Portland-based jamgrass group who has taken their alt-folk stylings to national and international stages. Julio has also made appearances with the Mike Prigodich Trio (MP/3), the John Taubman Trio, the Ben Macy Trio, the Ron Steen Trio, and numerous artists nationwide including poet Christopher Luna, and singers and songwriters including Matthew Gailey, Mya Elaine, Adam Sweeney, Bre Gregg, Kory Quinn, Laura Ivancie, Will West, Jordan Ross, and Sabrina Fountain.
Currently living in Vancouver, Washington, Julio likes computers, bookstores, and coffee shops. Julio dislikes television, dogs, and airplanes.
